Jammu and Kashmir Elections 2026: Only 9 Political Parties Eligible to Contest

In Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission of Jammu and Kashmir has declared only 9 political parties eligible to participate in the 2026 elections, while 33 political parties have been disqualified for not fulfilling the registration conditions.

According to sources, this decision was taken in light of the orders of the Supreme Court of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Election Commission sources, only 9 political parties have been registered under the Election Act 2020 so far. The registered parties include Pakistan Muslim League (N), Pakistan People’s Party, All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference and Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir.

Sources say that Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith Jammu and Kashmir, Sad-e-Haq Party Jammu and Kashmir, Jamaat-e-Falaah-e-Insaniyat Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation League and Jammu and Kashmir People’s Party are also among the registered political parties.

According to sources, the membership application of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was rejected on May 16, after which the PTI has announced to challenge the decision of the Election Commission in the higher judiciary.

Election Commission sources further said that the registration of several political parties is still pending and the process is slow due to non-fulfillment of legal conditions. According to the Election Commission, it has been made mandatory to fulfill other legal requirements including a fee of Rs 200,000 for party registration.
