129 journalists killed in 2025, highest number in three decades, CPJ

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that 129 journalists and media workers were killed worldwide in 2025, the highest annual number in the past 30 years.

This is the second consecutive year that a new record has been set for the killing of journalists, according to an annual report released on Wednesday.

The organization says that more than two-thirds of the deaths are due to Israeli forces. The backdrop to these deaths is the war in Gaza.

“At a time when access to reliable information is more important than ever, journalists are being targeted in large numbers,” CPJ Chief Executive Officer Judy Ginsburg said in a statement.

She added that when journalists are killed while carrying out their duties, the entire world is affected.

The report urges governments to take urgent and effective measures to ensure the safety of journalists, in order to prevent the ever-increasing threats faced by journalists and media workers.
