The constitutional bench of Pakistan’s Sindh High Court has granted bail to former member of the National Assembly and Ali Wazir, arrested in a case of allegedly spreading anti-state content on social media.
A two-member bench, which included Justice Arbab Ali and Justice Riaz Ali Sahar, ordered the release of Ali Wazir on submission of a surety bond of Rs 50,000.
The hearing was held in Hyderabad where the minister’s lawyer Imdad Haider Solangi presented arguments in the court.
According to the lawyer, in three cases registered against Ali Wazir, he has been acquitted during the trial, while in the fourth case, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has also confirmed in its inquiry report that no crime has been proven against him.
During the hearing, the court inquired whether any government agency has any objection to the release of Ali Wazir under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, as the NCCIA report did not prove any charges against him. However, the authorities maintained that Ali Wazir is also wanted in cases registered in other provinces.
The bench rejected this objection and granted bail. According to lawyer Imdad Haider Solangi, Ali Wazir is expected to be released from Sukkur jail on Wednesday after submitting bail bonds.
The lawyer expressed concern that the authorities may also register new cases to prevent his release. He said that there is no legal basis left to keep Ali Wazir in jail.
This development came after a legal process that began with a hearing on March 3, when the NCCIA, while submitting a report to the court, acquitted Ali Wazir of all cybercrime charges.
