Footage circulating on social media shows smoke rising from the US embassy building in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Reuters and the Associated Press reported that the US embassy was hit by a missile.
However, AFP reported that a drone strike caused the damage.
AFP also reported, citing multiple sources, that the attack came shortly after two Iranian-backed militants were killed in attacks on the Iraqi capital.
Security officials in Baghdad said the US mission was targeted in an attack.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump said that ‘US Central Command (US CENTCOM) has carried out one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East and has completely destroyed all military targets on the Iranian island of Kharg.’
In his message on Truth Social, President Trump said that ‘I have chosen not to destroy the oil infrastructure on the island. However, if Iran, or anyone else, attempts to interfere with the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.’
He called on Iran to lay down its weapons and ‘save what is left of their country, which is not much.’
Shortly before this statement, President Trump spoke to reporters before boarding Air Force One. Meanwhile, when asked how long he thought the war would last, he said, “I can’t tell you that either.”
“I mean, I have my own estimate, but what difference does it make?” he said. “It will last as long as it takes, they are finished.”
When asked what he meant by that, he said that most of their navy, air force and army have been destroyed.
It should be remembered that on Thursday, he had ruled out the possibility of the US taking over Kharg Island.
In an interview with Fox News, when asked if he had any intention of taking over the island, he said that it was not among our priorities.
