Today, World Press Freedom Day is being celebrated around the world, where the commitment to freedom of expression and protection of journalists is reiterated, while the difficulties faced by working journalists in Pakistani Kashmir have become a serious question.
Sardar Owais, a working journalist from the city of Bagh in Pakistani Kashmir, has been facing various cases and pressure for the past one year.
According to sources, several legal actions have been taken against him, which journalistic circles are calling acts of revenge.
Sardar Owais is not only facing legal problems, but there have also been reports of threats from banned organizations.
Journalist organizations say that this situation indicates an increase in threats to journalists in the region.
According to local observers, efforts are underway by the ruling and political elites in the region to suppress critical voices, due to which the scope of free journalism is being limited. There is an increase in incidents of harassment and pressure on working journalists.
Sardar Owais, while talking to Kashgal News, said that there is no clear criteria for journalists in the region by the government. According to him:
“There is an urgent need for practical measures for the rights and protection of journalists, so that they can carry out their responsibilities without fear and insecurity.”
Media experts and human rights activists have demanded that solid legislation be enacted to ensure the protection of journalists and ensure press freedom, so that democratic values can be promoted.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, while the services of journalists are being appreciated around the world, the current situation in Pakistani Kashmir requires that the challenges facing the journalism sector be seriously examined and immediate measures be taken.
