Public Accounts Committee active, Jinnah Model Town scandal under investigation again

An important meeting of the Public Accounts Committee of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was held under the chairmanship of Chairman Abdul Majid Khan, in which the Secretary Physical Planning and Housing, DG Mirpur Development Authority (MDA), Secretary Assembly, members of the committee, other concerned officials and media representatives were present.

The meeting reviewed the audit objections and financial and administrative irregularities of the MDA in detail.

According to sources, it was revealed in the meeting that the MDA Allotment Committee, taking powers from the Board contrary to the Act, allotted plots to the members of this committee itself, on which the Public Accounts Committee expressed strong anger and directed to declare all suspicious and controversial allotments null and void and issue notices to the concerned persons. It was informed that more than 1,000 cases of this nature are under consideration, on which the Secretary and DG MDA have been ordered to take immediate action.

The committee has also sought a report from the Accountability Bureau on the Jinnah Model Town Mirpur scandal, where irregularities worth Rs 1.59 billion have been identified. It was also said in the meeting that in this case, the MDA administration tried to cheat to provide records.

The Chairman Public Accounts Committee has formed a special committee under the chairmanship of the Secretary Physical Planning and Housing to conduct a thorough investigation into China cutting, illegal subdivision and creation of new plots across Mirpur, while it has also been indicated that charges will be filed against those responsible.

The Public Accounts Committee has also ordered action on the cases of violation of agreements, deviation from the original objectives and further sale in stadium shops, farmhouses and other allotments. In this regard, a formal request has also been made to the Auditor General of Pakistan to conduct a special audit so that an independent and comprehensive financial investigation can be made possible. This meeting is being heralded as the start of a major crackdown against financial and administrative irregularities that have been circulating in the Mirpur Development Authority for years.
