US military launches new strikes on southern Iran

The US military says it has launched new strikes on southern Iran, targeting Iranian missile installations and boats that were attempting to lay mines.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the strikes were carried out in “self-defense” and were intended to “protect our troops from threats posed by the Iranian military.”

Central Command spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins said the US military “continues to exercise restraint and defend our forces during the ceasefire.”

The strikes came as Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said some progress had been made in talks with the US, but that no agreement to end the conflict was “immediately expected.”

Hawkins said the target of the strikes was an area near Bandar Abbas. It is a southern coastal city that, according to the New York Times, also hosts an Iranian naval base on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media earlier reported that local authorities were investigating after explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas.

Iran has not yet responded to the recent US strikes. It is unclear how the attacks will affect any potential peace deal between the US and Iran.
