Love Across the Line of Control: Who is Zeeshan Mir, a young man from Haveli district?

The story of Zeeshan Mir, a young man from Haveli district in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, has been a topic of discussion on social media and in local circles for the past few days. Zeeshan Mir, son of Lal Din, allegedly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) into Indian-administered Kashmir on May 31 to meet his girlfriend.

Following the incident, we tried to get information about Zeeshan Mir. According to local sources, Zeeshan is a resident of Pankadri Bhedi village in Haveli district. He used to work in various hotels in Bagh district during the winter season, while in the summer he used to return to his native village where he was busy collecting herbs and taking care of livestock.

According to local journalist Zafir Rathore, the villages of Selikot and Talawadi, located on either side of the LoC, are separated from each other by a drain. There is a wooden bridge at Khawaja Bandi on this drain. They say that Zeeshan used to come to the Pakistani side while grazing his cattle, while the young girl used to come to the same area from the Indian side.

According to Zafir Rathore, it is likely that the contact between the young boy and the girl is not recent, but they had met before, as a result of which a relationship was established between the two.

According to a report by the international broadcasting organization BBC, Indian authorities have released the young girl after questioning, but Zeeshan Mir is still in the custody of Indian forces.

On the other hand, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Haveli district, Zeeshan Mir’s family has filed a missing person’s report, while further investigation is underway regarding the incident.

This is not the first time that someone has crossed the Line of Control for the sake of love. Earlier, on November 24, 2024, a similar incident took place in Haveli district when a young girl from Indian-administered Kashmir crossed the LoC into Pakistan-administered Kashmir to marry her lover.

Zeeshan Mir’s case once again highlights the fact that despite borders, military surveillance and political disputes in divided Kashmir for years, human relationships and emotions sometimes defy all barriers. However, such incidents often also lead to legal, security and social complications for the people involved.
