Kashgil News Exclusive Report
On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, while women’s rights and their struggle are being appreciated all over the world, about 3500 lady health workers in Pakistan-administered Kashmir have been protesting for their basic rights for the past one month.
The lady health workers had started the protest on February 6, and two days ago, they tried to convey their demands to the authorities by staging a sit-in in front of the Press Club on the main highway leading to the Secretariat. However, no progress has been made on their demands so far.
The lady health workers participating in the protest say that the problems they have been facing for decades include:
- Regular payment of pension
- Approval of service structure
- Service upgradation
- Job security and permanent status
According to the workers, these are the basic rights without which their professional services are being affected.
Expressing solidarity with the protesting workers, Syeda Yathrib, President of the Employees Association Women’s Wing, said:
“Whether it is a sudden disaster like Corona or going door to door to educate the public, lady health workers remain steadfast on the front line in every difficulty.”
She demanded that the government immediately resolve the long-standing problems of these working women.
A lady health worker participating in the protest said that the state makes loud claims on International Women’s Day, but the reality is that:
“The working women of the state have been sitting on the streets for a month and no one is listening to them.”
The workers say that this is not the first time that women associated with the health department have come to the streets for their rights. They have protested several times before, but the problems remain the same.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, lady health workers have demanded that all their demands be immediately accepted. They should be given the rights they have been waiting for for years so that they can deliver their services to the public without fear or hindrance.
