The 2.975-km Rathua Haryam Bridge in southern Mirpur district of Pakistan-administered Kashmir is nearing completion after 20 years.
According to official documents, the project was to be completed in 2014, which has now been completed in April 2026.
Initially, the project was estimated at Rs 1.3 billion, but at that time, it was approved for the third time by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) of Pakistan in February 2024, with a revised PC-1 of Rs 9.58 billion.
According to official records, a tripartite agreement was signed between the government of Pakistan-administered Kashmir and WAPDA in June 2003, under clause number two of which, the Rathua-Briam Bridge was approved by the Planning Commission of Pakistan to bridge the gaps between nearby villages due to Mangla Lake.
The project was to connect Mirpur city with Rathua-Islamgarh, Bariam, Kotli, Khaliqabad and Chakswari.
Approved in 2003, work on the project began in 2011 but was stopped after 70 percent of the work was completed in a period of four years.
In 2019, former Kashmir Affairs Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had said that in December, he would drive a car on the Rathua Haryam Bridge himself. If Ali Amin did not get it, then this wish of Ali Amin was fulfilled after almost six years by the current Kashmir Affairs Minister Amir Muqam by driving a car on the Rathua Haryam Bridge and inspecting it.
