On April 14, ‘Hill Language Day’ was officially celebrated for the first time in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with the aim of promoting the preservation of the region’s local language and culture. Events on this day were held in various cities where the importance of the Hill language was highlighted.

Although the celebration of Hill Language Day started on April 14, 2024 at the social level, this year for the first time the government officially recognized it and organized events at the official level. This development is being described as an important milestone for the promotion of local languages.

Writers, poets, students and social figures participated in the events held in the capital Muzaffarabad and other cities.

Speeches, folk songs and cultural demonstrations, literary sessions were organized in the Hill language at these events, which aimed to connect the new generation with their mother tongue.

According to experts, the Pahari language is spoken in vast areas of western Jammu where a large number of hill tribes live. This language is not only a means of communication but also a reflection of local history, traditions and civilization.

The speakers at the event emphasized that due to the increasing impact of globalization and other languages, local languages are under threat, therefore, inclusion in the educational curriculum, promotion of literary activities, government patronage are the need of the hour so that the Pahari language can be preserved for the coming generations.

Locals appreciated the initiative and expressed hope that the government will continue such initiatives in the future so that the cultural identity of the region can be maintained.
