Preparations for holding student union elections after almost four decades in Pakistan-administered Kashmir have reached their peak, where political and student activities have once again gained momentum in the Kashmir City Campus of the University of Kashmir.
The election campaign has been intensified by student organizations and various groups, while an atmosphere of political turmoil is being seen on the campus.
An all-party conference was organized by the students a few days ago, in which it was unanimously announced to hold student union elections at their own expense. After this announcement, various student groups have started a formal election campaign and are promoting candidates and ideologies through pamphlets, banners and wall chalking on the campus.
Student leaders say that May 19, 2026, has been set as the polling day at the Kashmir City Campus, for which preparations are in full swing.
According to the students, these elections are not only an attempt to restore the representative role of students but are also being considered an important step towards promoting democratic traditions in educational institutions.
However, students are also facing various difficulties during the election activities.
Talking to Kashgal News, a student from the Law Department of the University of Kashmir alleged that the university administration tore down the election pamphlets put up by the students on the walls, after which the students resorted to wall chalking.
Student leaders expressed concern over the behavior of the university administration and said that the administration was obstructing the election process. They were of the view that if the employees of the university can establish different unions to protect their rights, then the students should also have the right to form their own representative organization and participate in the democratic process.
Political and social circles are calling the restoration of student union elections in the University of Kashmir an important development, while the students are calling this process part of the struggle for their constitutional and democratic rights. There is excitement among students regarding the May 19th polling, and the election atmosphere on campus is becoming more active day by day.
