The situation has become more tense in the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the main educational institution of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, over the issue of student union elections.
In a notification issued on May 17, 2026, the university administration has decided to close the campus while announcing the holding of online classes in the university from May 18 to May 22, 2026, while on the other hand, student leaders have made it clear that the union elections will be held in any case.
The circular issued by the university administration has said that due to “some unavoidable circumstances”, all classes will be held online at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from Monday, May 18 to Friday, May 22, however, the offices will remain open as usual.
The notification has directed the heads of departments to ensure necessary arrangements for the effective holding of online classes.
Meanwhile, student organizations and student leaders participating in the union elections have declared that they will stick to their stance, calling the sudden closure of the university an attempt to stop the elections.
Student leaders say that the union elections process will continue and all candidates will submit their panel papers to the Election Commission at the appointed time in the morning.
According to sources, there is a possibility of a strong reaction from the students on the decision to suddenly close the university and various student groups will soon present their plan of action and official stance.
Currently, political and organizational activities are being witnessed in the university, while this issue has become a topic of discussion in student circles.
It should be remembered that a few days ago, students organized an all-party conference at the Kashmir City Campus of the university and announced to hold student union elections on their own initiative, after which electoral activities in the university were at their peak.
