A broad daylight target killing has taken place in Gojra, a suburb of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where Hamza Burhan, the principal of a local private college, was shot dead by an unknown gunman.
The incident took place within the limits of Saddar police station, but the police have not yet released a full FIR of the incident, while there has been no official confirmation of the victim’s death at the official level.
According to eyewitnesses, Hamza Burhan was present in his college and was instructing the cleaning staff to keep the institution clean as guests were expected. At the same time, there was a knock at the college gate. It is said that the person who came to the gate called Hamza Burhan out and opened fire on him as soon as he approached.
He was seriously injured in the shooting and was immediately shifted to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
According to police sources, the incident was reported at 12:10 pm, but no official statement has been issued regarding the identity or arrest of the attacker.
The investigating authorities have also remained silent on the motives of the incident for now.
On the other hand, various sources are claiming that the deceased Hamza Burhan belonged to the banned organization “Badr” and had been part of militant activities in Indian-administered Kashmir in the past.
According to some unconfirmed reports, Hamza Burhan was wanted by Indian security agencies in various cases and a reward of crores of rupees was also set on him. However, these claims have not been independently verified by any government agency.
According to reports, the deceased belonged to Indian-administered Kashmir. The incident has once again raised questions about attacks on former militants or controversial figures in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Earlier in 2023, a similar incident took place in Poonch, where a man named Muhammad Riaz, also known as Abu Qasim Kashmiri, was shot dead in a mosque during Fajr prayers.
According to reports, he also belonged to the Poonch district of Indian-administered Kashmir.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Muhammad Riaz had been a Kashmiri militant in the past, while his father and a brother had also been killed in the past. This is not the first incident, there have been about six such incidents before.
According to analysts, the recent incident may spark a new debate about the security situation in the region, cross-border tensions and the presence of individuals associated with militant activities in the past, especially at a time when security and intelligence matters related to Kashmir are already sensitive.
