JKJAAC leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir arrested and missing, protest sit-ins continue

Shaukat Nawaz Mir, the leader of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, which was banned by the police in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, has been arrested and disappeared.

Speaking to Kashmiri journalist Naseer Chaudhry, Deputy Commissioner Muzaffarabad Munir Qureshi confirmed this and said that Shaukat Nawaz Mir was arrested from the border between Muzaffarabad and Bagh.

Meanwhile, SSP Muzaffarabad Riaz Mughal says that Shaukat Nawaz Mir was wanted by the police in various cases and was arrested from the Dhirkot area during an operation.

However, he has not been revealed anywhere so far, in connection with which it is being said that he is missing.

It should be remembered that in the context of the protest movement, the Kashmir government had banned the Public Action Committee and initiated legal action against some of its central leaders.

The Home Department also announced a reward of Rs 10 million each for those who help in the arrest of four activist leaders.

According to the official notification, the reward list includes Shaukat Nawaz Mir, Omar Nazir Kashmiri, Khawaja Mehran Arshad and Sardar Aman Khan.

The government maintains that cases have been registered against these leaders and some others under sedition, spreading hatred or incitement against state institutions, disturbing public order, interfering in government affairs and other relevant sections.

On the other hand, the Public Action Committee and its supporters reject these allegations as political vendetta and take the stand that their movement is based on a peaceful struggle for public rights and constitutional demands.

They say that the government is resorting to legal action to suppress dissent.

It may be recalled that traffic jams, shutter downs and protest sit-ins have been going on across Kashmir for the 21st day, while the continuous internet shutdown has completed 25 days and the supply of food items has also been stopped by Pakistani forces, which has created a situation of starvation.

Sit-ins are going on in different areas of the state, in which a large number of women and children are participating. While the forces today launched a major crackdown against the protesters in Sangarh Pathara area of Dhirkot and raided various places.

According to sources, Rangers, paramilitary forces and police vehicles crossed Nala Iran and reached different areas of Pathara through Kere Padar, where they conducted raids at several places.

Although no arrest has been formally confirmed during these fresh raids, heavy movement and patrolling of forces is continuing in the area, which has created an atmosphere of intense tension and fear.
