Kashgil News Exclusive Report
A worrying increase in suicide cases has been recorded in Pakistani Kashmir during the last two years, which has created deep concern among experts and social circles.
According to the latest official data, 34 people committed suicide during this period, including 17 women, which shows an increase of about 50 percent compared to previous years.
According to official records of Muzaffarabad and its surrounding areas, 35 women attempted self-immolation in the last two years. Of these, 18 women were rescued in time. And 17 women could not survive.
According to experts, these incidents indicate the burden of domestic disputes, mental stress, economic difficulties and social attitudes.
This issue was also discussed in the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly recently.
Presenting a legal bill in the House, Chairperson of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and Member of Assembly Nisara Abbasi said:
“The increasing cases of suicide among women are a result of social injustice, domestic pressure and economic problems. The government must take immediate and effective measures.”
According to Sardar Waheed Khan, Director of Rescue 1122 and State Disaster Management Authority, many cases of self-immolation are also due to family disputes or other crimes.
He said:
“Some women who survive express disappointment with life due to severe mental stress and social attitudes.”
Psychologists and social workers say that emergency measures alone are not enough to prevent suicide. A comprehensive, state-level strategy is essential, which includes:
- Psychological counseling centers in schools, colleges and offices
- Mental health awareness campaigns
- Helplines for immediate help
- Legal protection for women
- Effective policymaking against domestic violence and social pressure
Experts warn that if immediate and effective measures are not taken, the incidence of suicide may increase further, which will not only lead to the loss of human lives but will also severely affect the overall psychological health and social stability of the society.
