The movement on the threshold of revolution in Pakistani Jammu & Kashmir & the question of an alternative system

By: Khwaja Kabir Ahmed

If the recent progress of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Public Action Committee is seen not in the light of mere statements but in the light of practical actions, then one fact has now emerged from obscurity and taken a clear form that this movement has moved beyond the stage of resistance and has moved towards revolution. But at the same time, another, equally important question is arising that does this potential revolution have any clear alternative system?

The real identity of movements is their actions, and the current trend such as setting deadlines, preparing for long marches, indefinite lockdowns and sit-ins, and practical instructions to prepare the people for a long struggle, all of these indicate that this movement has truly moved beyond temporary protests and transformed into an all-out public resistance. This is the stage where resistance reaches the threshold of revolution due to its intensity and scope.

Especially the planning of the long march with its spread to the grassroots and the continuous sit-ins and lockdowns that followed indicate that the movement is now moving not just to satisfy demands but to change the balance of power. When the streets become decisive and the state governance comes directly under the influence of the people, then it is no longer a matter of protest; it is the beginning of a new phase.

But here one fundamental fact cannot be ignored, namely that revolution succeeds not only by the intensity of resistance but by the definition of an alternative system.

The momentum of the movement at the moment is remarkable, but along with it there is also an intellectual and practical vacuum. If the current system is being challenged, what will come in its place? What will the governance structure be like? On what basis will the distribution of powers be? How will the accountability system work? And above all, what practical model will be given to the people that they can trust?

These are the questions that transform any movement from resistance to an organized revolution. It should be remembered that where this clarity is not present, either movements disintegrate or the same old system returns with new faces. Because a power vacuum is never empty. If you do not fill it, someone else will.

Therefore, in the current situation, the movement is going through a double phase. On the one hand, its momentum and pressure are taking it closer to revolution, and on the other hand, the lack of clarity about the alternative system may push it towards an uncertain end.

Now the real challenge is not just to increase the resistance but to give it direction. Without presenting a clear, viable and popular alternative, no movement can reach its logical conclusion.

It may be correct to say that this movement is moving from resistance to revolution. But the success of this revolution depends on whether it also has a clear destination. Because the principle is quite simple: the momentum of resistance gives rise to revolution, but the clear direction of the movement makes it successful.
