Refugee seats: Government files reference in Supreme Court seeking constitutional and legal guidance

The Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir government has filed a reference in the Supreme Court seeking constitutional and legal guidance on the issue of 12 refugee seats in the Legislative Assembly.

The reference seeks the Supreme Court’s opinion on the legal and constitutional complications arising from the reserved refugee seats to avoid any kind of constitutional ambiguity and administrative difficulties in the future.

The government is of the view that this important issue must be resolved in accordance with the Constitution and law to ensure the right to representation and continuity of the democratic process.

According to legal experts, the Supreme Court’s opinion on this issue will provide guidance for future government actions and the electoral process. This development is also being considered important in political circles as the issue of 12 refugee seats has been the focus of political and legal debate for some time now.

After the Supreme Court filed a reference in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, all eyes are now on the Supreme Court’s next action and the legal interpretation given on the matter, which may have an impact on the parliamentary and political situation in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The reference will be heard tomorrow, Friday, June 5, by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court.

It may be recalled that the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Public Action Committee has called for a general strike and long march on June 9 to abolish the Muhajirin seats and meet other demands.
